5 Curly Commandments

This post was also featured on | Summer 2016

Here are the top 5 Curly Commandments I have stuck by over the years and they have kept me and my curls on point! These are 5 commandments every curly girl should LIVE by! Enjoy!

1) Thou Shall Keep a Hair Pick Close at All Times

Every curly girl's secret weapon is her hair pick. If you love big curls like me, a hair pick is a MUST HAVE! Many of us with softer or fine curls have a hard time achieving volume. A hair pick can give your hair temporary lift that you may be missing out on. The key to using a hair pick is to concentrate on the roots without disturbing your curls.

2) Thou Shall Always Use A Generous Amount of Conditioner

You know when the instructions on how to use a product call for only a "quarter-sized" amount? Well, forget that quarter - I need triple that! We all know that #slip is necessary when detangling our curls. This is why a conditioner like the Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Curl Nourish Conditioner is awesome. Not only is it going to hydrate your thirsty curls, but the amount of slip in this product makes your detangling process so easy!

3) Thou Shall CoWash AND Shampoo

If you've been on curly hair/natural hair blogs you are probably up to speed on the debate between whether co-washing or shampooing is better. Yes, cowashing (conditioner- wash) is great for maintaining moisture but it does not cleanse your hair. I repeat, a conditioner does NOT cleanse your hair! I love to CoWash like the next curly girl, but only in between wash days. Incorporating a moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo like the Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Curl Nourish Shampoo will cleanse your hair without stripping it of moisture. I recommend shampooing at least once a week to make sure your hair and scalp are rid of any build up, and cowashing within the week.

4) Thou Shall Deep Condition Weekly

This is the most important commandment of them all! Deep conditioning is crucial to making sure your curls are in a healthy state. My favorite deep conditioners are DIY! I'll take a great conditioner and add a little extra to it like honey, extra virgin olive oil, or coconut oil! After you mix your DIY deep conditioner, let it sit for 20-30 min under a warm towel and rinse!

If you're not into the DIY thing, a great deep conditioner I've tried recently is the Ouidad Curl Immersion Triple Treat Deep Conditioner.

5) Thou Shall Have Fun With Thy Natural Hair

Yes, having fun with your natural hair is a must! Curls come in all shapes and sizes which gives us so much freedom and originality when it comes to creating fun hair styles. One of my favorite styles is after I've worn my hair in a wash-n-go for a few days, is fluffy waves. I'll freshen my hair up with a generous amount of Garnier Fructis Curl Renew Reactivating Milk Spray and create four large flat-twists. I'll keep these twists in over night or for a few hours to set and fluff them out. This style gives me fluffy waves without the dryness!

Hope you enjoyed these commandments and incorporate them into your routine!
